Theft arrests: police find suspected heroin

In the north-eastern Polish region of Podlasie, police officers have arrested three men suspected of carrying out thefts in two shops. According to investigators, the victims estimated the total losses at more than 2,600 zloty. What began as a straightforward series of shop thefts took an additional turn when officers secured items from one of the detainees that pointed to a possible connection to narcotics.

Arrests linked to thefts in two stores

Police in Augustów said their investigation started with reports and information from local retailers. Two affected stores reported thefts that allegedly occurred in quick succession. During subsequent police actions, three suspects were identified and arrested. Officers believe the men may have been involved in both incidents.

The victims put the financial damage at over 2,600 zloty. The statement did not specify which goods were taken. For criminal proceedings, however, the overall amount is relevant because it illustrates the scale of the offence and feeds into the assessment of the allegation.

Seizure: a syringe and foil-wrapped packets

During searches and checks connected to the arrests, officers found a syringe and foil-wrapped packets on one of the men. Such finds are routinely treated as potentially important evidence, especially when they may indicate the possession or transport of controlled substances.

A preliminary field test with a drug tester indicated, according to police, that the substance was heroin. Rapid tests provide an initial assessment on site and are typically confirmed by further laboratory analysis. Even so, an early result can shape the direction of the investigation, for example if additional offences—such as drug possession—are considered.

Suspects from Suwałki and initial allegations

The detained men are said to be residents of Suwałki. Police reported that they have already been presented with allegations of theft. The property offence is therefore the central element of the case arising from the incidents in the two shops.

At the same time, the discovery of the suspected heroin packets is likely to be a key focus for investigators. Depending on the classification—such as quantity, packaging, the circumstances in which it was found, and any additional traces—a find like this can carry different criminal consequences. The possession of hard drugs can be prosecuted in Poland, as in many European countries. If there are indications of dealing, distribution, or drug-related acquisitive crime, investigative avenues often expand significantly.

Legal framework and possible consequences

For theft, Polish criminal law provides for prison sentences depending on how the offence is assessed and whether there are prior convictions. The statement notes that the alleged offence can be punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment. It also points out that under recidivism conditions, a sentence may be increased. Such references in police reports are often intended to make the legal classification understandable to the public.

Whether and to what extent a drug offence becomes part of the proceedings will depend on further examinations. Seized substances are usually analysed forensically to confirm type and purity. Investigators may also check for additional items, communications data, or clues indicating supply channels. The combination of property crime and a drug connection is relevant because it may point to criminal motivation or an acquisitive dynamic linked to substance use.

What investigators now need to clarify

  • Whether laboratory analysis conclusively confirms the substance as heroin.
  • What quantity was involved and in what circumstances it was carried.
  • What role the three suspects actually played in the thefts at the two shops.
  • Whether further offences or links—such as acquisitive crime or distribution—are plausible.

Significance for the region

The case shows how quickly an operation that initially concerns “classic” shop theft can turn into proceedings with an added narcotics angle. For local police units, this often means that alongside securing evidence for the property offence, steps must also be taken to document and examine potential drug-related evidence. For the public, the reference to a suspected heroin seizure is particularly sensitive, as heroin is among the most dangerous substances and is commonly associated with severe health risks and a high potential for dependency.

How the proceedings continue will depend on the next steps by prosecutors and on the results of forensic examinations. Until a final decision is reached, the presumption of innocence applies to the detainees.
