Pisa Airport: Drugs and 2 million euros cash seized in 2025

At Pisa International Airport "Galileo Galilei", the Guardia di Finanza and the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli (ADM) significantly stepped up controls in 2025. This was in response to sharply rising passenger numbers: around six million travellers used the airport – an increase of 7.8 per cent on the previous year. The most frequent destinations were the United Kingdom, Tirana, Morocco (Marrakech and Casablanca), Spain, France, Poland and Germany. **Cash and foreign exchange** In the fight against breaches of currency regulations, finance officers and customs officials at the SOT (Squadra Operativa Territoriale) seized undeclared cash totalling 2,166,131 euros. This resulted in 194 administrative sanctions. The amount paid directly in fines was 123,925 euros; 7,200 euros were confiscated. Particular attention was paid to "repeat offenders" – travellers who had already been caught for the same offence in the past five years and were again carrying amounts above the permitted limit, especially on routes to Albania and Morocco. In these cases, the authorities ordered the prescribed administrative seizures. **Drug seizures at Pisa Airport** In the area of combating drug smuggling and trafficking, 88 reports were drawn up. With the support of the Guardia di Finanza sniffer dogs, 76.37 grams of hashish, 138 grams of marijuana, 5 grams of cocaine and other synthetic substances were seized. The finds show that Pisa Airport is not only a hotspot for currency and tobacco offences but also a focus of drug enforcement and seizures. **Tobacco and cooperation** In the fight against tobacco smuggling (T.L.E.), the authorities confiscated 69,059 grams of tobacco; 126 reports were drawn up, leading to sanctions of 354,150 euros. The results are based on the cooperation protocol between ADM and the Guardia di Finanza, which regulates the exchange of information and joint controls on the ground and thus enables more effective action against breaches of customs, currency and security regulations. As of 13 February 2026.
