Naples: 11 arrests in mafia and drug probe

Italian police in Naples executed pre-trial detention orders against eleven people in the Pianura and Fuorigrotta districts. The operation took place in the morning on the authority of the Naples prosecutor’s office; the measure was requested by the district anti-mafia directorate and ordered by the judge for preliminary investigations (G.I.P.) of the Naples court. The suspects face serious charges, including a mafia-type association, murder and extortion aggravated by mafia methods, an association aimed at drug trafficking, and illegal possession and carrying of firearms. Investigations led by the Polizia di Stato mobile unit, coordinated by the anti-mafia directorate, are linked to the murder of Gaetano Antonio, shot in an ambush on the Naples seafront in March 2023.

Gaetano Antonio was described as a representative of the Marsicano/Esposito clan in Pianura. He was sitting with two companions in a parked car in an area associated with the city’s nightlife when an attacker approached the vehicle and fired six shots. Antonio was seriously injured and died in hospital twelve days later. Immediate investigations by the mobile squad documented the context of the crime and led to the identification of an alleged material perpetrator. According to investigators, the attack was part of an ongoing clash between the Marsicano/Esposito clan and a new criminal formation linked to the Carillo family.

Rivalry over drug markets and extortion

The conflict reportedly centred on control of drug trafficking and extortion in Pianura. Investigators state that the alleged shooter belonged to the group opposing the Marsicano/Esposito clan. The Carillo-linked formation allegedly ran a thriving retail drug business and controlled numerous street-level dealing networks across Pianura. So-called “piazze di spaccio” played a central role in revenues and in the balance of power between the groups.

Investigators also rely on footage from a well-known television programme. According to authorities, dealing activity was filmed; the material was added to the case file and reportedly shows phases of drug handovers and people packaging and distributing narcotics. Such images are used to document the everyday operations of alleged trafficking structures and to place individual suspects within specific actions.

Communication from prison and further allegations

Further inquiries into competing camorra networks allegedly showed that a leading Marsicano/Esposito figure used a mobile phone unlawfully while detained. Through the device, he is said to have issued instructions that included extortion against operators of dealing networks in Pianura, as well as arson or similar violent acts. This line of investigation connects leadership structures with operational control over local markets and suggests influence exerted even from detention.

Seizures during the operation

During police activities, officers reportedly secured the pistol used in Gaetano Antonio’s killing. Additional firearms of various types were seized together with ammunition. Investigators also confiscated marijuana, hashish and cocaine in quantities described as doses, as well as cash believed to derive from street dealing. Exact quantities and attribution to individual suspects remain part of the ongoing proceedings.

The measure enforced is a precautionary step during preliminary investigations; appeals are admissible. Those affected are presumed innocent until a final judgment. The account follows public communications by Italian authorities and documented investigative steps concerning murder, weapons and drug crime in the Naples area.

Public context

The case illustrates how anti-mafia investigators combine homicides, weapons findings and drug trafficking into one strategic picture. The arrests are not isolated; they sit within long-running conflict lines between groups claiming territory, revenue streams and social control in city districts. For residents, that means increased police and judicial presence, but also a need to separate publicly available investigative details carefully while court proceedings remain open.

Authorities stress that today’s searches and judicially ordered measures are part of a broader crackdown on structured crime. Alongside classic mafia charges, digital traces, telecommunications and media evidence are increasingly central. The combination of television reporting and police forensics can be decisive in mapping perpetrator chains and backers.

Open questions remain about the exact roles of the eleven suspects and the evaluation of individual evidence. Prosecutors will continue investigations and the defence can examine the charges. Until then, the case exemplifies how, in southern Italy, drug economies, violence and organised structures intertwine, and how institutions attempt coordinated action across multiple offence areas at once.
