Varese: Six arrests after drug investigations

In the early hours of the morning, officers of the Guardia di Finanza in the northern Italian province of Varese carried out a major operation against organized drug trafficking. On the basis of a pre-trial detention order issued by the investigating judge at the Tribunal of Varese, at the request of the local public prosecutor’s office, six people were arrested. Five of the suspects hold Italian citizenship, while one person is of Albanian nationality. They are accused of large-scale trafficking in narcotic drugs, the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and making serious, partly armed threats. At the centre of the investigation was a criminal group that is said to have specialized in the trade of cocaine and hashish. According to investigators, the organisation operated across regions and exploited the geographical position of northern Italy to carry out its activities between Lombardy and Piedmont. The greater Milan area, the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola and the Varese region with the municipalities of Arcisate and the Luino area were particularly affected. From these locations, supply chains and distribution routes were allegedly coordinated and extended across several provinces. The financial police of the Gaggiolo company relied on a combination of classic police work and modern investigative methods. In addition to surveillance and controlled measures, extensive telephone, environmental and communication interceptions were used. In this way, the officers gradually succeeded in mapping out the suspects’ network, exposing its structure and defining the roles of individual participants more precisely. Over the course of the investigation, a total of eight concrete drug transactions were documented, according to the authorities. These involved mainly deals with cocaine and hashish, amounting to around 5.5 kilograms in total. The estimated street value of these deliveries exceeds 150,000 euros. Investigators assume that the observed transactions represent only a section of a much broader trading activity and that the secured data point to further processes that have not yet been fully reconstructed. During earlier measures, a suspected accomplice had already been arrested in flagrante while in possession of more than one kilogram of cocaine. This arrest, according to the investigators, confirmed the assumption that the group had a stable logistics setup to procure, store and distribute larger quantities of narcotics to buyers in different regions. The network relied on a wide range of helpers and contacts who took over specific tasks such as transport, storage or mediation. In addition to the drug trafficking itself, the group also faces accusations of violent extortion. Investigators report several cases in which the suspects allegedly used massive intimidation to enforce outstanding claims in the form of cash or assets. In some instances, illegally possessed firearms are said to have been used to increase the pressure on the victims. Among the extorted goods were not only sums of money but also other valuables such as motor vehicles. Parallel to the arrests, numerous searches were carried out simultaneously at different locations. Properties in the provinces of Milan, Verbania and Varese were particularly affected. The aim of these measures was to secure further evidence, to uncover possible hiding places for narcotics or weapons, and to gain a better understanding of the organisation’s financial structures. The results of these searches are still being evaluated and may provide additional investigative leads. The Guardia di Finanza emphasises that this operation illustrates the close cooperation between law enforcement and the judiciary in combating serious drug crime. The focus is not only on seizing individual shipments but above all on dismantling entire criminal structures along the supply chain. By combining long-term observation, technical surveillance and targeted arrests, networks are to be identified and sustainably weakened. At the same time, the authorities underline that all suspects are presumed innocent until a final conviction is reached. The pre-trial detention now imposed primarily serves to prevent further offences, to hinder any attempts to tamper with evidence and to safeguard the evaluation of the seized material. The public prosecutor’s office in Varese sees a strong public interest in information about the case, especially against the backdrop of the ongoing fight against the illegal narcotics trade. The publication of the press release was therefore expressly authorised by the competent public prosecutor’s office. It is intended not only to inform about the state of the investigation but also to show that the security authorities are determined to act against organisations that, through drugs, weapons and violence, create significant risks for the population. Further developments in the proceedings will now depend on the detailed analysis of the evidence and the upcoming judicial decisions.
